5 Viral Skincare Ingredients in Korea: What They Actually Do

PDRN, peptides, niacinamide, zinc, and collagen can seem impossible to avoid in Korean-skincare feeds and storefronts. But viral is a measure of visibility—not an evidence grade. A trending name tells you what people are talking about; it does not tell you whether every product bearing that name will deliver the same result.

That distinction matters because these five names do not describe five interchangeable actives. PDRN used in a topical eye cream is not the same intervention as clinic-administered PN or PDRN injections. “Peptides” describes a broad family. Niacinamide percentages need formulation context. Zinc changes function with its chemical form. Collagen in a cream mainly meets the outer surface of skin; it does not simply replace collagen deeper in the dermis.

The better question is not “Which ingredient is most viral?” It is: “What exact form, route, concentration, and finished formula am I looking at—and does that match what I want from my routine?”

Why these five names are everywhere

K-beauty moves quickly, and products often combine familiar ingredients with newer formats. A 2026 industry presentation filed through the Korea Exchange highlights PDRN and collagen-gel products among current K-beauty trend categories, alongside combinations involving peptides and niacinamide. That is useful evidence of commercial visibility. It is not clinical proof that the ingredients work equally well, or that every one is equally viral across Korea.

Even the word “functional” needs context. Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety defines specific categories and review rules for functional cosmetics. A viral claim on social media is not a substitute for understanding the product category, label, directions, and evidence for the finished formula.

1. PDRN: clinic fame does not automatically transfer to a serum

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a preparation of DNA-derived fragments. Much of the excitement around the name has been influenced by medical and aesthetic-clinic use, but route matters. Evidence about injected PN or PDRN cannot simply be copied onto a topical cosmetic that sits on the skin’s surface.

A systematic review of injectable PN and PDRN identified nine studies involving 219 participants. That is a different intervention from a serum or cream, and the review itself describes limitations in the available evidence. It does not prove that a topical cosmetic heals tissue, regenerates skin, or produces injection-like results.

Topical human research is beginning to appear. One split-face study tested a specific eye cream containing 0.1% PDRN-850K in 31 women for four weeks. The results may support further interest in that particular formulation, but one small study of one eye cream cannot validate every PDRN serum, every concentration, or every marketing claim.

When reading a PDRN product page, look for information about the finished formula and its intended cosmetic role. Hydration, texture, and comfortable daily use are more realistic starting points than promises of DNA repair or tissue regeneration.

2. Peptides: a family name, not one miracle ingredient

A peptide is a chain of amino acids, but “peptides” on the front of a bottle is about as specific as saying a product contains “vitamins.” Different peptides have different structures and proposed functions. Their stability, ability to reach a relevant site, concentration, and interaction with the rest of the formula all matter.

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis included 19 randomized controlled trials and 1,341 participants. The overall findings may sound encouraging, but the pooled benefits were driven largely by oral polypeptide studies. They should not be translated into the claim that every topical peptide cream builds collagen or produces the same result.

For a topical product, check the ingredient list for the specific peptide name rather than stopping at the category word. Then judge the formula on realistic outcomes—such as hydration, softness, or the appearance of texture—rather than slogans such as “Botox in a bottle.” Peptides may be useful supporting ingredients, but the category name alone cannot tell you how well a product will work.

3. Niacinamide: comparatively established, but more is not automatically better

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 and has been used in topical skincare for years. Among these five ingredients, it has comparatively established human evidence in finished cosmetic formulations—but the evidence is still linked to particular concentrations, formulas, study populations, and outcomes.

In a 12-week split-face study involving 50 women, a moisturizer containing 5% niacinamide improved several measured signs of facial aging compared with its control. Another study of 2% niacinamide examined facial sebum output. These studies help explain why niacinamide appears in formulas positioned for barrier support, uneven-looking tone, texture, and oil balance.

They do not establish that a 10% or 20% formula is automatically better than one containing 4% or 5%. Higher numbers can be persuasive on a label, but superiority requires direct evidence; it cannot be inferred from percentage alone. A formula you can use consistently without irritation may be more useful than chasing the largest number.

Keep cosmetic language precise. Niacinamide may help the appearance of uneven tone or pores in a particular formula, but it does not permanently shrink pores, and a cosmetic article should not present it as a treatment for acne or melasma.

4. Zinc: the form changes the function

“Contains zinc” is incomplete information. The chemical form determines what the ingredient is doing.

  • Zinc oxide is used as a mineral ultraviolet filter. However, SPF belongs to the tested finished sunscreen—not to the word “zinc” and not to a raw ingredient in isolation.
  • Zinc PCA appears in cosmetics marketed for oily or blemish-prone skin. Direct evidence for zinc PCA alone is limited, and studies may test it as part of a combination formula rather than as an isolated active.
  • Zinc pyrithione is another distinct substance with different uses and regulatory context. Findings about it do not describe zinc oxide or zinc PCA.

A review of zinc in acne found inconsistent results and limitations in the evidence. A trial involving a zinc PCA combination product cannot show what zinc PCA would do alone. That is why “zinc treats acne” is too broad, just as “zinc gives SPF” is too broad.

Before judging a zinc product, identify the full ingredient name and product type. A tested sunscreen containing zinc oxide and a leave-on serum containing zinc PCA answer completely different skincare questions.

5. Collagen: surface hydration is not dermal replacement

Your skin naturally contains collagen in the dermis, where it contributes to structure. Collagen added to a topical mask or cream is a different thing. Native collagen is a large molecule and does not readily pass through intact skin to replace collagen in the dermis.

A review of collagen used in cosmetic products describes roles that make more sense at the surface: collagen can help form a film, hold water, and support a temporarily smoother or softer feel. Those are valid cosmetic benefits. They should not be inflated into a claim that a mask “rebuilds” deep skin collagen.

Route matters here too. Evidence about oral collagen supplements cannot validate a topical cream. A recent review of oral collagen trials also found that conclusions were sensitive to study quality and funding. Whether swallowed or applied, the word “collagen” should not be treated as a shortcut around the details of the actual product.

How to choose without buying all five

A trend-aware routine does not need to become a five-product shopping list. In fact, introducing several new formulas at once makes it harder to know which one helped, which one irritated your skin, or whether the combination is simply too much.

  1. Start with the job you want done. Is your priority surface hydration, a comfortable moisturizer, oil balance, sun protection, or the appearance of uneven tone? The concern should lead; the viral name should not.
  2. Match the ingredient form to the product category. “Zinc” is not enough. “Peptides” may not be enough. Look at the full ingredient list and the type of finished product.
  3. Keep route-specific evidence separate. An injection study does not prove a serum, and an oral supplement trial does not prove a mask.
  4. Evaluate the whole formula. Humectants, emollients, texture, packaging, directions, and your ability to use the product consistently may matter as much as the headline active.
  5. Add one change at a time. Patch test when appropriate, follow the product directions, and stop if irritation develops.

Before adding a viral ingredient to your routine, ask:

  1. What is the exact ingredient or chemical form? A category name may hide important differences.
  2. What route was used in the evidence? Topical, injectable, and oral findings are not interchangeable.
  3. Was the evidence about this finished formula—or only a different product? Concentration, delivery, and supporting ingredients can change the result.
  4. Is the promise cosmetic and realistic? Surface hydration and a smoother appearance are not the same as healing tissue or rebuilding the dermis.
  5. Does this product answer a need in my routine? “None of the five” is a valid answer when your current routine is already working.

PDRN, peptides, niacinamide, zinc, and collagen can all belong in well-designed skincare. What they cannot do is remove the need to read the label, understand the route, and judge the entire formula. Let the trend introduce you to an ingredient—but let evidence and your actual routine decide whether it deserves a place on your shelf.
