VELUNA JOURNAL · ON-DUTY SKINCARE
Your pre-flight routine isn’t the problem.Hour five is.
Five reasons to consider a twist-up balm for your crew bag — including the one thing it won't do.
An advertisement from VELUNA. We sell the Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Volume Multi Balm. Everything below is either the manufacturer's own information, published research we've linked, or reviews from our customers — labeled so you can tell which is which.

You did it properly. Cleansed, serum, moisturizer, maybe a sheet mask the night before. Makeup applied on skin that actually felt hydrated.
Then somewhere over the ocean, you catch yourself in the lav mirror and one spot has gone dry. Under the eyes, usually. Or the smile lines. Your concealer has settled into a crease that wasn't there at check-in, and the skin around it feels tight.
Nothing has to be wrong with your routine. You may simply be several hours into a very low-humidity environment.
And here's the practical problem: you can't redo a full routine in a lav with 40 minutes of service left. You need something smaller than that.
That's what this is about — not a replacement for your skincare, but the small thing you do when one area needs attention and your whole face doesn't.
A note before we start: not every flight attendant has this problem. In one interview series with current and former Singapore Airlines crew, one member said flatly that she didn't get dry skin from flying, and another said her oily skin had nothing to do with the job. If your routine already carries you through a long sector, you don't need this product. This is for the crew whose skin doesn't.
It's the cabin, not your routine
Cruise-altitude cabin air is genuinely, measurably dry. The National Academies puts typical relative humidity at cruise around 10–20%.
Cabin environment · National Academies
Researchers have measured what that does to skin on an actual flight. In a study of eight women on a long-haul sector, cabin humidity fell below 10% within two hours, and skin-surface hydration dropped across the face, with the cheeks showing the largest reduction — up to 37%.
That study was small, and the participants were travelers who'd deliberately stopped using skincare — so treat it as a measurement of the environment, not a prediction of your face. The more relevant study for you tested 71 commercial crew across 16 intercontinental flights. Baseline cabin humidity was 10–12%. When researchers switched on cabin humidification, crew reported fewer skin symptoms alongside fewer eye and nose symptoms.

Which is the useful conclusion: the dryness you notice at hour five isn't a failure of your morning routine. It's what a very low-humidity environment does to skin surface over time — and crew are in it more than almost anyone.
Emirates crew member Rachel Johnson, speaking to 7NEWS about her own preparation, put it simply: her skin "obviously dries up quite easily," and she gets "a bit dry under your eyes." She was describing her routine, not this product — but the moment she's describing is the one this page is about.
One dry patch doesn't need a seven-step reset
Here's what crew actually do about it, in their own words.
Air New Zealand's Charlotte Meiklejohn carries a hydrating mist and says she'll "reapply moisturiser to maintain hydration and comfort." easyJet's Alexia Efthymiadou notes the "limited time on our short-haul flights" and sprays mist "on top of my make-up." Former Singapore Airlines crew member Fiona called "skin dryness... my main issue" while flying.

Notice the pattern: quick top-ups that fit around the work. Sometimes, that means applying a product over makeup.
That's the gap a targeted balm can fit. Your moisturizer is the foundation, and it stays that way — morning, and again after duty. When the problem is a strip under one eye and the corners of your mouth, you may prefer a stick that glides directly onto those areas. Start with a small amount and check how it works with your makeup.
A few of our customers described exactly that decision:
"I bought this mostly for my under-eyes because makeup had started looking drier lately. I wasn't expecting anything dramatic, but my skin looks softer and more rested when I use it. I especially love it over makeup in the afternoon."
"I use it around my smile lines and lips and it makes everything feel more comfortable throughout the day."
"I've been using this mostly around areas that tend to look dry, and it definitely helps my skin feel more hydrated and smoother."

Keep your moisturizer. Add a different format for the moments when a small, targeted touch-up suits you.
A stick that goes exactly where it's dry
The format is the whole argument, so here's precisely what it is.
A twist-up balm stick, 10 g, in a compact, portable format. No jar to dip into. You twist it up, glide it over the area, replace the cap, and it goes back in your bag.
Where Medicube directs it to be used: under-eyes, cheeks, lips, smile lines, forehead, neck, collarbone and other dry areas of the body — while avoiding direct contact with the eye itself.
When: as the last step of your routine, or as a touch-up during the day. Medicube directs that it can be applied before makeup and reapplied over makeup, and reapplied whenever you want extra hydration.

Two honest caveats, because you'll find out anyway:
- "Can be applied over makeup" is the manufacturer's direction, not a promise that your foundation will be undisturbed. There's no published wear test. The image shows the stick format. Try a small amount with your usual foundation to judge the finish for yourself.
- There's no established wear time, and we're not going to invent one. Medicube's direction is to reapply when you want to, which is how our customers describe using it.
What our customers consistently mention is the carrying, not the science:
"It's smooth, easy to apply, ready to carry in my purse, soaks in nicely and not greasy."
"I love how convenient it is — perfect for quick touchups at work or on the go... This little pink stick has definitely earned a permanent spot in my bag."
"The texture is smooth, nourishing, and gives such a pretty glow without being sticky. I also love that it lasts a long time and is super easy to carry around."
Small enough for a crew bag. Precise enough for one area. That's the entire pitch.
What's actually in it, and what Medicube measured
Most balm sticks are wax and oil. This one is too — that's what gives it its solid format and smooth glide. The difference is what Medicube adds to that base.
The formula includes glycerin and sodium hyaluronate, alongside emollients such as caprylic/capric triglyceride and plant oils, plus waxes including candelilla wax. Humectants help attract water, while emollients and waxes help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss. Hydrated skin can look smoother and more supple, making dryness lines look softer.
That's what "plumper-looking" means here, and we want to be exact about it: hydrated skin looks suppler. It is not the same as restoring facial volume, and it is not a filler alternative. Any brand telling you a balm does what an injection does is lying to you.
The headline ingredients include PDRN (listed as Sodium DNA), collagen, peptides, caffeine, retinol and nicotinamide-related compounds. Medicube also highlights 5% Volufiline in its product materials. Our honest position: PDRN is interesting, but ingredient research is not proof of what this balm will do. A 2026 systematic review of PN- and PDRN-based interventions included seven randomized trials covering 183 participants. Injectable findings cannot establish the performance of a balm you swipe on. So we're not going to build the case on them.

What Medicube itself measured. The brand publishes results from a clinical test conducted 12 January to 20 February 2026 by the Global Institute of Dermatological Sciences:
| Area | Change | When |
|---|---|---|
| Under-eye hollowness | +25.7% | After 2 weeks |
| Lip line | +12.1% | After 1 use |
| Crow’s feet | +10.7% | After 2 weeks |
| Frown line | +6.2% | After 1 use |
| Neck line | +5.6% | After 2 weeks |
| Forehead line | +3.3% | After 2 weeks |
Results published by Medicube. The sample size, participant profile and full protocol were not available in the public product information reviewed, so these are the manufacturer's figures rather than independent proof. Results vary by individual. We found no published study testing this balm in a cabin or on flight crew.

One thing you should know before buying
The ingredient list contains retinol, and it contains geranium, ylang-ylang, bergamot and rose flower oils. Medicube describes the formula as low-irritation tested, but hasn't published that protocol.
So despite what you may read elsewhere, we won't call this fragrance-free, and we won't tell you it's suitable for every sensitive skin. One reviewer who described herself as acne-prone in her late 30s wrote, "so far I have not experienced any breakouts." Another simply wrote: "Burns the skin." Both experiences appear in the reviews displayed on VELUNA. Reviews are individual experiences, not an estimate of how often irritation occurs.
Patch test it on your jaw before you put it near your eyes. If you avoid retinol or react to botanical oils, this isn't the product for you, and the guarantee below exists for exactly that reason.
You can find out for yourself, with a 60-day guarantee
Here's the honest situation with a balm stick: texture is personal. You can see the stick here, but we can't tell you how it will feel on your skin, under your foundation, in your cabin. One of our reviewers wrote that it "feels a bit oily at first" before settling. Another said that if it isn't rubbed in properly it can feel greasy — and that makeup sits well on top of it.
You'll only know by using it. So your purchase comes with our 60-day money-back guarantee.

Questions before your next shift
Does this replace my moisturizer?
No. It's a targeted top-up for specific dry areas. Keep your routine exactly as it is.
Will it wreck my foundation?
Medicube directs that it can be applied over makeup, and our customers report makeup sitting well over it — but no published wear test exists and we won't promise zero disturbance. Try it on a day off first.
How long does it last on the skin?
There's no established wear time, and anyone who gives you a number is guessing. Reapply when you want to.
Can I take it through security?
It's a solid stick, not a liquid or gel. Security rules vary by country and airport, though, so we can't promise how any individual checkpoint will treat it.
Will it melt in my bag?
It's a solid wax-based balm. We don't have published storage-tolerance data, so we won't claim it's heat-proof.
How long does one stick last?
It depends entirely on how often you use it and on how much you use. We don't have usage data, so we're not going to estimate.

Try it for 60 days. Keep it either way.
